Briar Prastiti

VOICE, GUITAR

Briar Prastiti (b. 1992) is a freelance composer and vocalist, holding a Masters of Musical Arts in composition from the New Zealand School of Music. She specializes in film, orchestra, and theatre music, with a diverse vocal palette. Her work often explores dark, romantic, and folkloric themes, drawing from her Greek heritage. Briar was honored the 2023 Composer in Residence for the New Zealand School of Music and has received praise for her ambitious collection of projects that she completed at the Douglas Lilburn residence. Notable projects include her three orchestral works (Akri, White Red Black, and Pegasus) premiered by Orchestra Wellington and Bay of Plenty Symphonia, and the soundtrack for Circa Theatre production "Prima Facie" in 2023. Alongside these projects she writes for chamber ensembles, including her piece Terra Firma (solo flute and Taonga Pūoro), and Kyklos (for solo vibraphone) to be premiered by Australian virtuosic percussionist Claire Edwardes. As a songwriter and producer, Briar's songs have been featured on collaborative albums and EPs, including projects with John Psathas. Her electronic debut album, "Blue Anima," showcases her versatility. Briar continues a collaboration with improvisational 'Moth Quartet' (string quartet), blending improvisational strings with her original guitar and vocals in the project "Twinn Ethyr."
